Manly 2

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project focused on revitalizing and expanding a single-storey Federation-style detached cottage. The work included restoring the original front façade and existing ground floor rooms, guided by the character of the original period architecture, while adding a new first-floor extension and a detached carport, both featuring a contemporary contrast in materials and design.

The site benefits from rear lane access and a long northern boundary, offering strong potential for natural light and amenity. However, its proximity to a neighbouring café introduced acoustic challenges. A key design goal was to harness light in targeted areas of the home while effectively shielding the interiors from surrounding noise, both from the street and the northern side.

Original features of the cottage were thoughtfully restored and reimagined, maintaining a strong connection to the home’s heritage. The newly added spaces were designed to complement the existing structure, introducing clean, modern volumes to the rear and upper level, offering a refined contrast while preserving the integrity of the original dwelling.
