Clontarf 2

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A thoughtful extension to an existing double garage on a large suburban block, designed to create a flexible, multi-purpose space with a lower-level sauna.

Located in the harbourside suburb of Clontarf, the project responds to the site’s dramatic topography, expansive water views, and bushland setting. Conceived as both a creative workspace and a private retreat, the studio balances openness and enclosure—offering a light-filled, tranquil environment that supports everything from focused work to extended family stays and exercise.

Elevated above the pool, the addition required careful integration of pool compliance measures without compromising the clarity of the architectural expression. The structure’s modest footprint and low-profile form sit comfortably within the landscape and the broader context of the main home, drawing from its original period detailing while anticipating the owners’ future renovation aspirations.

Located in a bushfire zone, durable materials were essential. Spotted gum used extensively and chosen for both its fire resistance and natural ability to weather into the site. Generous glazing opens the interior to shifting light and views, while ensuring the studio feels anchored, resilient, and in fitting with its surroundings. The outcome is a modest, raised studio that is both peaceful and harmoniously linked to its environment.
